Erlangen is an industrial and university centre, and Bavaria's eighth largest city. Forests, fields, and parkland make up a good half of its administrative area, while beautiful examples of Baroque architecture bear witness to its past history. Modern Erlangen was constructed after the Second World War, with the coming of Siemens and then other well-known companies, the influx of refugees, and the growth of the university. As well as the electrical engineering industry (4/10 of jobs), the focus of activity in Erlangen is on research, medical products and services, and computer software, in addition to its prosperous businesses and craft industries. It is a city which has a reputation for its keen interest in ecological matters, and where the use of bicycles is being encouraged, with the provision of 180 km of cycle lanes. |
