THE NEGRO - PAGE
ITEM # 5558
PRICE $45.00
This is a genuine vintage steel
engraving titled "The Negro Page.". It is in excellent condition and was
engraved from an original work by Albert Cuyp. This print was published in the
Art Journal of 1858 and is accompanied by an article describing the life and
work of the artist, an original period description.
"Cuyp was born at Dordrecht, in 1606: the date of his death has never been
correctly ascertained - a fact from which some inference may be drawn of the
little estimation in while his countrymen held his talents, otherwise some
record of his decease would have come down to us. He was known to be living in
l672. It is in England that his best pictures are to be seen, and not only his
best, but the largest number of his works.
The picture in Buckingham Palace known as " The Negro Page," is a composition
that includes many of the materials which Cuyp was accustomed to group on his
canvas. The scene lies on the bank of a river adorned with several edifices of a
picturesque architectural character. The position of the figures and animals is
sufficiently clear- the cavalier is booted is spurred ready to mount; the other,
in his shoes and woolen hose, is also equipped for a ride, in costume not
uncommon in those days: the "Negro Page" has charge of the horses. As a work of
Art it is of the highest character, beautifully painted, rich and transparent in
color; the glow of a fine summer's evening lighting and warming every object on
the canvas.
The dimensions of the print area minus margins
are approx. 7.25 by 10.50 inches. The overall dimensions are approx. 9 by 12.25
inches. This is not a
reproduction or reprint. It is a 146 year-old steel engraving in excellent
condition and guaranteed to be as described.
